Migraine Headache

We could list 50 things that might trigger a headache, but there are at least 50 ways to treat it. One of the most prominent, especially for migraines, is neurofeedback.

Biofeedback Therapy for Migraine Headaches

In the 1970s, sensors were placed on the forehead to measure muscle tension via a gauge for stress-related headaches; the gauge would drop as the frontal muscles relaxed. Years later, an audio signal was added to the system to provide feedback when the muscle reached the relaxation threshold; this was termed the "therapeutic tone." Additionally, tones of varying pitches could be used to help reduce muscle tension, serving as an added reward. As the muscles relaxed, headaches diminished.

As biofeedback evolved, it expanded beyond monitoring muscle activity to include brain waves, heart rate, and breathing patterns.

Neurofeedback is a form of brain exercise that teaches individuals to reduce the specific brain waves associated with tension; it is particularly effective in cases of migraine.

There are meta-analyses demonstrating the proven efficacy of biofeedback for migraines.

These analyses incorporate findings from 55 studies—including randomized controlled trials—and cover follow-up periods of up to 17 months, supporting its recognition within evidence-based medicine.[1]

The American Academy of Neurology, the US Headache Consortium,

the American Academy of Family Physicians,

the American Headache Society,

the American College of Emergency Physicians,

the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine,

the American Osteopathic Association, and

the National Headache Foundation

have all recognized biofeedback as a proven treatment method for migraines.

According to the report by the Quality Standards Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology (authored by Prof. Dr. Wall E., Assoc. Prof. Dr. J. Keith Campbell, Dr. Donald B. Penzien, and Dr. Eric M. from the Mayo Medical School/Mayo Clinic Department of Neurology and the University of Mississippi Medical Center Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior), biofeedback is classified as "Grade A" among cognitive and behavioral treatment recommendations for migraine headaches.

Grade A is defined as evidence of efficacy and quality based on multiple well-designed randomized clinical trials yielding consistent results directly supporting the recommendation. [2]-[3]

Levels of evidence for efficacy: Levels 4 and 5. A comprehensive review of the gathered and presented evidence leads to the conclusion that biofeedback is a supported, effective treatment option for migraines. This corresponds to Level 4 according to AAPB/ISNR evidence-based medicine criteria.

A meta-analysis conducted in 2008 supports biofeedback as an effective and specific treatment option for tension-type headaches. [4]

According to AAPB/ISNR evidence-based medicine criteria, this represents the highest level of evidence (Level 5).

Migraine Treatment in Children

You can read in Science Daily that biofeedback is a scientifically proven method.

Studies on biofeedback in childhood migraine indicate that it is effective when used alone.

Biofeedback in Migraine Treatment Guidelines

Biofeedback is included in the treatment of migraine in the treatment guidelines jointly prepared by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the US Headache Consortium.

 

The National Headache Foundation (NHF) treatment guidelines include biofeedback therapy for stress-related headaches in children aged 10 and older.

The American Pain Society[7] has included biofeedback therapy in its pain treatment guidelines.

 

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and NIH panel[8] and The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) have added Biofeedback therapy to the TREATMENT GUIDELINES for the treatment of pain in cancer patients.

Foods that can trigger headaches

Besides neurofeedback, you need to pay attention to your diet to manage headaches. You should eat regular, nutritious meals. Hypoglycemia can cause headaches. A sugary breakfast can cause abnormal increases and decreases in insulin levels, which can lead to headaches. Some foods can trigger headaches in some people. Some people are sensitive to tomatoes and corn. Some migraines can also be triggered by food, such as:

  • Milk

  • Chocolate

  • Egg

  • Wheat products

  • Peanuts

  • Peanut butter

  • Acidic drinks

  • Tomatoes

  • Potatoes

  • Green pepper

  • Aubergine

  • Nicotine products

  • Cheese

  • Spicy foods

  • Alcohol (especially red wine and beer)

  • Vinegar

  • Coffee

What to do in case of a migraine emergency.

You can intervene with simple methods the moment you feel a headache coming on. Some of these include:

Drink a few glasses of water. Dehydration can worsen a headache.

Sit down. Take a break and breathe deeply.

Do neck exercises. Neck exercises take just three minutes and help relieve the tension built up during long hours at work.

If your headache is tension-related, apply ice to the back of your neck. If ice isn't available, you can use a cold bottle instead.

Taking calm, deep breaths from your abdomen alters the oxygen-to-carbon dioxide ratio in your blood, which helps reduce stress and pain.

Get up and go outside. Take a five-minute walk. Spending long periods in enclosed spaces under artificial lighting can aggravate a headache. Stepping outside—even for just five minutes—to enjoy the fresh air and sunlight (if available) can be beneficial.

You can ask a colleague nearby to give you a massage to relax the muscles in your neck, shoulders, and head.

If a severe migraine does not go away, seek professional medical help.
